Desjuan Johnson has officially been named Mr. Irrelevant XLVIII
Desjuan Johnson, a defensive tackle from Toledo, proves that it's not all about size when it comes to being an impact player. He recorded 65 total tackles and 16.5 tackles for loss, helping Toledo to a 9-5 record and a victory over Liberty in the Boca Raton Bowl.
When the pick was finalized, Irrelevant Week CEO Melanie Salata Fitch was thrilled at the prospect of this new Mr. Irrelevant's legacy. "We're excited to be the ones to kickoff Desjuan's NFL career, especially since he's our first LA Ram since they moved back from St. Louis. Holy Toledo, he's now our hometown favorite!"
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Desjuan shared that he has only been to California once to play a game against Fresno State. When asked about his thoughts on coming to visit, he said that he's grateful for the opportunity, despite never having swam in the ocean before.
Johnson also continued to express his gratitude for being selected. "I put everything in God's hands. When I got the call, my heart dropped. Had great conversations with the team. I decided not to tell my family so that they could see it happen on TV. They were so excited."
Last year's honoree, Mr. Irrelevant XLVII Brock Purdy proved that he was anything but Irrelevant with his debut in the NFL Draft. During his rookie year, Purdy stepped into the starting job and had a 7-0 record as a starter and led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship game.
The Irrelevant Week Team is looking forward to celebrating Desjuan when he makes his way out to Newport Beach, CA in June.
Irrelevant Week was started in 1976 by Paul Salata, an NFL alum and philanthropist who believed in doing something nice for someone for no reason. His daughter, Melanie Salata Fitch, serves as the CEO of Irrelevant Week representing Paul's vision to celebrate the underdog with a series of events in Newport Beach. Over the years, Irrelevant Week has raised over $1 million for charities across Southern California including Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (OCYSF), Serving Our Youth (SOY), and Serving People in Need (SPIN).
